How to Properly Maintain Your Septic Tank

15 September 2025

Septic Made Simple

Proper maintenance of your septic tank is essential to ensure the performance and longevity of your system. Discover our practical tips to prepare for the technician’s visit and take care of your effluent filter.

Why Maintenance Is Essential

Proper maintenance of your septic tank helps to:

  • Extend the lifespan of your system,

  • Prevent backflows and unpleasant odors,

  • Reduce unexpected repair costs,

  • Protect the environment and groundwater quality.

Neglecting these steps can lead to costly damage and put your family’s health at risk.

Before the Technician’s Visit

To ensure the proper operation of your system and prepare your installation before the technician arrives:

  • Keep a clear path to all covers.

  • Remove any objects that could prevent opening them (a concrete cover can weigh up to 90 kg / 200 lb).

  • Ensure a minimum clearance height of 1.75 m (5 ft 9 in).

  • Clear the top and surrounding area of each cover by 10 cm (4 in).

  • Make sure your pets do not interfere with operations.

During winter, shovel a path at least 90 cm (3 ft) wide to the covers, then leave a 10–15 cm (4–6 in) layer of snow on top to serve as natural insulation.

Effluent Filter Maintenance

The effluent filter is an essential component of your septic system. It should be cleaned at least twice a year, in spring and fall, or more frequently if recommended by the manufacturer.

At Bionest, effluent filter cleaning is provided free of charge during maintenance visits. However, between visits, it is the owner’s responsibility to ensure this follow-up to maintain system performance.

Important reminders:

  • Never touch wastewater without protective equipment.

  • Never enter a septic tank: it is a confined, hazardous space containing toxic gases and very little oxygen.
